American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative

AMERICAN LUNG CANCER SCREENING INITIATIVE

The American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative (ALCSI) is a 501(c)3 non-profit that aims to raise awareness about lung cancer and increase access to lung cancer screening among high-risk individuals. Through Massachusetts and the U.S., ALCSI works on thousands of community outreach initiatives.

To be eligible for lung cancer screening, the U.S. guidelines say that a person must be 50-80 years of age, either be currently smoking or have quit within the past 15 years, and have at least a 20 pack-year smoking history (i.e., 1 pack a day for 20 years, 2 packs a day for 10 years, and so on). To reach this population, one of ALCSI’s latest initiatives entails working with health inspectors in cities across Massachusetts to post flyers about lung cancer screening in stores where cigarettes and nicotine replacement therapies are sold. By posting these flyers at the point-of-purchase, we can reach people who are most likely to be eligible for lung cancer screening but may not be reached by traditional public health campaigns.
